“A History of the Haight Ashbury.” Written in 1956 by 8th-grade student Janet Mofatt, this essay was published in 1980 as part of the Haight Ashbury Arts Workshop’s Street Museum installations project.

1945 — San Francisco Master Transit Plan

The Panhandle is a thin strip of green space extending from the eastern edge of Golden Gate Park at Stanyan Street to Baker Street, contained between Oak and Fell Streets. In 1945, the city created a master plan that would destroy the Panhandle as part of a freeway project.
