Elaine Mayes took compelling portraits of Haight Ashbury residents taken in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Several were used in Love Needs Care (DE Smith & J Luce, Little, Brown, 1971).

Located at the main branch of the San Francisco Public Library, the Center is a research collection of books, newspapers and magazines, photographs, maps, posters, archives and manuscript collections, and ephemera, documenting all aspects of San Francisco life and history. The Center is also the archives for the City and County of San Francisco.
